I can still remember the time you spent here in Toronto during your school field trip.
Wow! It’s been such a long time!
Thanks to the friendship we started then, I’ve been able to know Brazil - that huge, marvellous country of yours. I’ll never forget those wonderful beaches, those never-ending forests, the heat, the people... Well, I’ll never forget the time I enjoyed there with you and your family.
I’ve recently started working in the iron and steel market here in Canada, and I could notice how important it is, as is the iron and steel mining. Thus, I’ve been called attention to the fact that the Brazilian company ‘Vale do Rio Doce’ has acquired an extensive share of a Canadian mining company called ‘Inco’.
You see, I have some savings which I’ve decided to invest in the stock market. After talking with some experts, I’ve been advised to invest in a Brazilian company which seems very promising – the ‘CSN’. However, you know, I have my fears, so I turn to you hoping to get some enlightenment.
According to the information I got here, ‘CSN’ is a public company. Is that right? Can you confirm that? I must also know if they control their whole steel production process, which is key for the investment safety. Do they own the necessary raw materials? Do they have their own coal supply? Is the iron ore imported? Does ‘CSN’ concentrate their sales in Brazil only, or do they export as well? If so, what is their export structure like?
What about the energy issue? I’ve read something related to the possibility of, in the medium term, power blackouts in Brazil. Can you tell me if ‘CSN’ has any project concerning that issue? Actually, what is their role in the Brazilian energy matrix? And do they have a good environmental program? This is extremely important for those investments since companies which don’t look after the environment do not usually linger in investors’ hands around here.
Could you also check their employees’ relationship policies? Are there any programs concerning profit sharing, health and safety, performance and competence evaluation, or anything like that? What is the rate of workplace-related accidents in the company?
Now, please be honest, would you recommend that investment?
